What Exactly Does ADIO Mean?

Of course, we know it stands for Above-Down-Inside-Out. It was an acronym said to have been coined by B.J. Palmer who felt it encompassed the philosophy of chiropractic. It became the name of a short-lived chiropractic school in Pennsylvania. I’m sure if you asked a number of chiropractors its meaning, you would get various answers. Some would say it has to do with the way the mental impulse that innervates the human organism, travels from the brain, over the spinal cord, the spinal nerves and out to the periphery. That is a physiological description/explanation. Someone who is more philosophically-inclined might answer a little differently. They might suggest that the innate intelligence of the body is above or greater than anything else and its expression as life, health, and healing comes from inside only. Both of these explanations would be correct. I think it was one of those little private jokes that B.J. had with himself in which he never gave us a consistent answer, if he answered at all. He felt that if you thought about it enough, eventually you would get the big idea for yourself.

I believe that the more you think about it, the more this ADIO thing is applicable to other areas of life, and the way you view those areas and life in general. Sure, chiropractic is a big part of ADIO thinking but it includes other areas like health in general and certain concepts in particular. Chiropractic only addresses the cause of DIS-EASE but ADIO world and life viewpoint enables us to think in terms of addressing cause rather than effects in other areas of life. The ADIO approach views the idea of taking responsibility for one’s life in more areas than just health. ADIO is based upon something greater than the educated mind of man in running the body but also in running the environment, and in running the universe. All of these concepts and others of an ADIO viewpoint can be applied to more than just correcting vertebral subluxations. If people had that ADIO viewpoint, it would be much easier for them to grasp the big idea of chiropractic philosophy. In fact, you have probably had people come in your office with an ADIO viewpoint…they grasp chiropractic right away, while others with an outside-in viewpoint never see chiropractic as more than a treatment for some symptom or condition.
