Training v. Learning

We must distinguish between training and learning. An animal’s educated brain can be trained. A human educated brain  is also able to learn . Pavlov’s dog and a person both may be trained by a bell but only a person can respond the first time to  the words “dinner’s ready”.

    • A person who understands what “dinner” is and what “ready” means can put those two words together as a concept and come to the table even if they have never been to the home before. If they do not know where the dinner table is located that may be a problem. Vocabulary is necessary as is understanding concepts. Pavlov’s dogs had neither. My dog never learned “dinner is ready” but the sound of a can opener before, during or after dinner always brought her running even if it was to open a can of tomatoes or peaches.

  1. I understand ? But I’m not sure I’m learning ?
Maybe all of those that learn, must understand but not all that understand, learn?
    Is developing a skill, learning?
Back in the day, some excellent and talented jocks weren’t so hot in the vocabulary department. And visa versa
Maybe learning is not a great word to necessarily associate with the ability to extrapolate or to comprehend?
