David Koch, D.C. in his philosophy text makes a distinction between metanatural and supernatural. Some do not like that distinction and cite DD’s, BJ’s and RWS’s use of supernatural terms like God to describe what Koch would call metanatural phenomena, universal and innate intelligence. I have no problem with David’s distinction and in fact it may be helpful but it only serves to give us another degree of separation between chiropractic and theology. For some, like David Koch, that may be personally helpful in not having to come to terms with reconciling chiropractic and the supernatural. For others that is a copout. For BJ, I suspect, he would say it was a copout, a way of allowing anyone to make of chiropractic what they wanted. The religions of mid-western United States of the 19th century (chiropractic must be understood in the time in which it was discovered) could make of it what they wanted. However most recognized it as the Judeo-Christiana concept of God.
Do you make a distinction between metaphysical and metanatural?”
Since metanatural is Koch’s term, you would have to ask him but from what I understand of his writing, I think he feels the latter is a better and more descriptive term.
Well then I won’t ask you the difference between metanatural and supernatural. Since we do not have a superphysical in our lexicon, I wonder how meta- and super- relate. May I ask the title of David’s book?
Contemporary Chiropractic Philosophy an introduction, Life University Press, Roswell Publishing Company 2008
Reading the book now by your recommendation Joe.
Very interesting how he Does contemporize the 33 principles with some revisions to create perhaps a greater continuity of a deductive syllogism then a rote listing of somewhat disconnected principles or arguments that RWS lays out, plus some logical reordering of the principles. Of course this all can be debated, discussed and I welcome perhaps more specifics from any of those who have read it.
It is a valuable read. Interesting how he seems deal with cycles, mental impulse, innate brain, other Chiro philosophical terms, but seems to have issue with a complete assignment of innate intelligence transmission to the nervous system, something that I have questioned as a philosophical departure but have seemed to resolve perhaps through my telling of the story over and over, as Claude would describe as Unlearning.
Perhaps I’m not making myself clear, but that’s ok. I’m posting this more as a discussion point for those who care to criticize, support, analyze this interesting departure from the normal 33 order and descriptions.
It also shows me what can be accomplished personally, defining a change or alteration on something that for 85 years or more has been layed in bedrock. It’s good to think and probe deeply so without condemnation one can arrive at a truth that perhaps points more or less accurately. I guess conflict does clarify 😉
David,
Throughout this year of COTB we have been basically following the deductive reasoning of the 33 ABSOLUTE principles of chiropractic’s basic science, with its few TIMELY inductions along the way. (RWS is the one WHO chose to chart this monumental task much better than I ever can!). We all are indebted to RWS, B.J. and D.D. Everything begins with the original observation of universal organization and the assumption of “A universal intelligence in in all matter and continually gives to it all its properties and actions, thus maintaining it in EXISTENCE. This is the early assumption, an a priori truth, and the foundational stable platform on which ALL of chiropractic rests. We seem to forget that from a chiropractic stand point, that this is the origin of the EXISTENCE of all that exist… including our own universal EXISTENCE as e/matter. The fact that we are conscious or not, of this fact, is irrelevant except WHEN we leave our original stance and the proverbial “aliveness” to begin the task of building a container… an educated intelligence. Joseph has a term for this: DI-PSYCHO which is really dualistic thinking taking over, especially in the Western world, as education emphasizes competition, and success. Boundaries, group-think, and exclusion thrive. Educated intelligence hides whatever is considered unacceptable. Even our true sharing in the subatomic particles, with ALL of universal e/matter, becomes hidden beneath the need to know the principle of unknowability of the EPR effect that I spoke earlier. We have constructed many ways to meet our needs for security, control, and esteem. The goal is an asymptomatic, feel good individuation, and the emphasis is on the desires of the individual, and his or her positive self-image and comfort. In other words, symptoms have no place within “living things” and must be seen as negative survival values at any cost (even the cost of dying on the operating table). This is fine as far as it goes, which is not very far, I am afraid; but it is all that a medical culture knows.
The goal of universal intelligence, which is the LAW of organization is always union with e/matter through its function (pri8) which is really EXISTENCE also called UNIVERSAL life. This LAW of organization comes disguised as our existence… yet, for the purpose of understanding life, we often confuse existence and being alive. These are two different concepts. To have a full (pri5,7, 9,22) and inevitably normal(pri27) expression of the innate FORCES of the innate intelligence of the body, involves both METAphysical and physical, which is a path of descent, paradoxes, contradictions, conflicts doubts, and lots of spinal checks that teach us to let go of our desire for an asymptomatic and antiseptic biological life. This ADIO view point teaches us HOW to trust the simple abiding of intelligent information created by intelligence uniting e/matter to itself on the existential level (pri8 and 10) —which is exactly the observation and desire of the assumption of principles 18 and 20 on the level of “living things”. –
– Our carefully constructed educated container must gradually crack open, as we realize that we are not separate from the law of organization, (even though we are a “living thing”), from others, or from our expression, or lack thereof, of instructive information created by intelligence.. Now educated intelligence is seen for the partial but limiting gift that it is. Now educated intelligence is ready to choose to be compliant, servant, and is even willing to “humble” itself for the sake of the law of ACTIVE organization for itself and for others. –
– It is me WHO chose to post before that the major premise is a universal principle that belongs to the entire universe and that includes ALL that has EXISTENCE. It is the initial assumption an objective universe, independent of consciousness and conceptual constructs based of observation and inductive reasoning. It is an a priori truth that chiropractic appropriates itself of. So, the “discovery” of a universal principle that we call the major premise is NEW knowledge and information which is the concern of our basic science. Again, this universal principle, that we call the major premise, is absolute, duplicable and constant. It is APPROPRIATED as the foundational platform of Chiropractic’s basic science using DEDUCTIVE REASONING. We can apply the information from this platform to extrapolate the “expression of this intelligence through matter is the chiropractic meaning of (universal) life” which is principle #2. –
– As per principle #2, the chiropractic meaning of universal life (existence), through deductive reasoning, is seen as the expression of universal intelligence through ALL e/matter, living and non-living, we can conclude that “existence is necessarily the union of intelligence and matter” which is principle #3. This can be elaborated to illustrate the process of deductive reasoning and lays the groundwork to make the case that, chronologically through mostly DEDUCTIVE REASONING, the 33 principles ARE our basic science. It promotes the rational logic used by the chronology of the 33 principles using DEDUCTIVE REASONING which proves that if a premise is TRUE and rational logic is used through deductive reasoning, our conclusions will also be TRUE. Otherwise, the 33 principles of chiropractic become simply “armchair philosophy”, have no way to be seen as the AUTHORITY of its basic science, and become simply “armchair philosophical constructs” that cannot be logically applied as non therapeutic. Chiropractic simply remains an alternative within the medical/therapeutic system.
So, the start point of chiropractic is the appropriation of the major premise as the chiropractic meaning of UNIVERSAL life, which includes ALL e/matter, living and non-living. I FIRMLY see the faulty reasoning of “re-arranging” or “re-compartementalizing”, which alters the rational chronological and deductive logic of the 33 principles. To ASSUME that the word “life” included in principle #2 applies only to biological life and excludes universal existence of e/matter is a grave error and collapses the foundational platform of chiropractic’s basic science with its 33 principles. Universal intelligence, and its expression, is INTRINSIC to ALL e/matter, living and non-living and it continually gives to it ALL properties and actions, thus maintaining it in EXISTENCE (pri1). This is HOW we exist, this is HOW we know that we are united to the universal law of organization (universal intelligence) through its instructive information (pri8, 10, 13, 14) and that we are maintained in ACTIVE organization, alive, (pri18, 20, and 21) within LOM (pri24). This is HOW we overcome the splits of DI-PSYCHO created by our needs for security and order. Now we are capable of non-dual thinking and we can accept any state of e/matter, with or without symptoms. We no longer have anything to prove or protect, so that we can practice the chiropractic objective, which is to LACVS for a full expression of the innate FORCES of the innate intelligence of the body. PERIOD! To move any further, is taking a step AWAY from the center of the “forest” as Reggie used to say. Keep walking and you eventually are OUT of the forest all together. The chiropractic objective is a TRUE conclusion based on the deductive reasoning of the 33 principles of chiropractic’s basic science and it is WHAT it is. Then it is you WHO can practice the chiropractic objective with simplicity and serenity. Either we accept the major premise as an a priori truth, or we don’t. It is me WHO chooses to observe that there is ABSOLUTELY no logical reasons, at this point in history, to alter any words or the chronology of the 33 principles of chiropractic’s basic science. An examination of the process of inquiry makes it evident that theories are not simply derived inductively from experience. It was Albert Einstein WHO chose to comment: “But on principle, it is quite wrong to try founding a theory on observable magnitudes alone. In reality the very opposite happens. It is the theory which decides what we can observe.” It is as simple as that. David and I have been friends, have taught together at Sherman and shared the speakers platforms for 30+ years and his book provides many welcomed insights… yet it departs from the rational logic of deductive reasoning. It walks away from the center of the “forest”.
Claude,
So p2 is the implicit deduction out of p1 which calls for existence, organization, active organization, and life, manifested thru the persistence of The Triune. Within the limits posed by p24, biological life manifests as p18 expressing intelligence thru matter always as p32.
The 33 principles is not about biological life, it’s about the major premise and it’s relationship to ALL that exists, non living and living and how the chiropractic objective relates to it, proclaiming the Reality of ADIO.
This is NOT the premise or focus of the book stated, yet this book, within an intellectual exercise of analyzing and the fact that conflict clarifies has its valuable purpose for those, ME, WHO gain use of its function.
Unlearning and Learning is a step by step process, that happens in time p6 as educated gains knowledge of ADIO, thru ADIO
David,
I got what you said! Thank you.
Joe,
Claude has brought up the term DI-PSYCHO, and I do understand his usage of it, basically, but I wanted to hear it from the source, YOU. Perhaps you could define and comment on it, as it seems so very relevant to the effects and use and mis-use of Educated Intelligence.
Perhaps you could without condemnation on my questioning, afford me that information, even if it goes outside the parameters of this blog and this blogs focus. Whatever. I’d respect your opinions and comments.
Thank You 😉
David, the Greek term is dipsuchos. In transliterating to the English we replace the “u” with a “y”. It means literally “double(di) minded “suchos”,although it is pronounced dipsookos You are correct it does relate to the activity in the educated brain. It is like the media saying on the same day we should ignore communist Korea and embrace communist Cuba, duh? It’s like chiropractors wanting to get sick people well (the medical objective ) and at the same time saying they embrace the 33 principle which have nothing to do with sick people and disease.
Joe,
So if one does not truly understand the 33 principles are they then open to NOT understanding ADIO? Meaning, that a failure to understand Chiropractic philosophy will place the importance of Educated Intelligence before Innate Intelligence particularly with regards to viewpoint.
Claude seemed to indicate that an incorrect understanding of the 33 principles (ala Koch book), leads to the symptoms, syndrome of DI-PSYCHO which is really Mankind’s usage of Educated Intelligence in a way that generates dualistic thinking, maybe what you’re saying more simply, hypocrisy and arrogance, etc.
That a complete understanding of The 33 p’s, with ones WHO accepting the knowledge and limits of complete knowing, with what he termed ‘the EPR effect’, making the Choice allows one to live From the Major Premise, NOT from the biological, linear arrival (a latter principle), within the philosophy (Koch), which as he said collapses it.
Do you agree? Or is that not pertinent to Understanding DI-PSYCHO, which is my question to you.
Claude,
I get it, even more today as you so well described the relationships and 32 principles deduced from the Big Idea Major Premise p1, days before.
I return to it for further integration, propelling a Transformation, with patience, respect for time p6 and LOM which effect and in part is 1/2 or maybe 1/3 or some vital fraction that defines oneself, maybe all of oneself, but we can just leave it at ME Choosing each day WHO I am, with honor and respect.
Chanukah is a rememberance of WHO. It’s the event of the Jewish people knowing that G_d defines them! not Hellenism, which is the domain of Man (educated) – what the Greeks gave us. Such a mighty important development. Philosophy, analysis, science, but also dualism, and abundance of AMORALItY, men moralizing man.
Universal intelligence while not a pious stance, can be a priori to it (not chiropractic, not necessary), but it exudes something bigger, something omnipresent, something singular that humbles man and mans educated, educated intelligence which is beautiful and critical to a moral stance and purposeful life, ADIO style, but ONLY when Choice of WHO one IS is valued and by free will, utilized.
It’s tricky, it’s paradoxical, it’s tiring, and it’s painful, but there is HOPE.
Chanukah is about light, hope, miracles and Chiropractic ADIO.
Claude, if you would take another moment to restate what you stated above, over and over, well, just one over, it would be welcomed and valuable, and if not, I get it and always,
Thank You 🙂
Claude,
Could you clarify the
‘unknowability of the EPR effect that I spoke earlier.’
I’m not familiar with this terminology as it applies to chiropractic.
Upon googling, it references
Enhanced permeability and retention?
And the center of the forest is where I want to be 😉
David,
With the 33 principles of chiropractic’s basic science, there are two ways of arriving at a conclusion: deductive reasoning and inductive reasoning. We use mostly deductive reasoning and it is used when a researcher works from the more general information to the more specific. Sometimes this is called an “above-down” approach because the researcher starts at the top with a very broad spectrum of information and works her way down to a specific conclusion. An example of deductive reasoning can be seen in the set of statements: EVERY DAY, I leave for the office in my car at seven o’clock. EVERY DAY, the drive to my office takes thirty minutes and I arrive at the office on time. Therefore, I conclude that if I leave for the office at seven o’clock today, I will be on time. The deductive statement above is a perfect logical statement, and does rely on the initial premise being correct. The key word is EVERY DAY. Perhaps if today there is an accident on the way to the office, slowing down traffic, I may end up being late. This is why any hypothesis can never be completely proven, since there is always the possibility that the initial premise could be wrong. –
– The major premise is based on observation and ASSUMED to be an a priori truth. If you probe deeper, according to the EPR paradox that comes from Einstein, Podolsky and Rosen, you realize the incompatibility of the lack real properties of subatomic objects and the LIMITATION of the absolute speed of light (believe to be the highest, invariant speed in nature). It was Petroni and Vigier, WHO several years later “saw” that “exchanges of information” occur FASTER than the speed of light. It is this uncertainty that creates the principle of unknowability and, of course, it applies to the major premise also. –
– So you can see that words and concepts simply point to reality. They are not reality itself. Therefore the truth of the major premise in unknowable and unprovable with words and concepts due to this principle of unknowability. Yet, if the major premise IS an a priori truth, and we use rational logic and deductive reasoning to put into words the subsequent 32 principles, the conclusion of the chiropractic objective is also true. There is ALWAYS the possibility that the major premise could be wrong. It is me WHO chooses to ASSUME the major premise to be an a priori truth and that the 33 principles of chiropractic’s basic science are a solid foundational platform on which chiropractic firmly stands. In other words, the 33 principles of chiropractic’s basic science are the AUTHORITY of chiropractic. 😉
Claude,
Thank you for that Claude!
Maybe Ignorance IS bliss, therefore the decisions to choose, and perhaps choose WRONG are avoided.
Awareness, and Truth can bear a great burden and responsibility, that can be overwhelming.
It would seem that FAITH comes in as a counter balance to realization of great Uncertainty.
Choosing with ones left brain is one thing, but unless educated commits with right brain, and heart and soul, there really is no connection, no ability to USE Ones Choice, effectively.
How many people realize the uncertainty of things that THEY think are absolutely true, without having made a choice.
The paralysis of analysis certainly gets into the web of uncertainty, plus perhaps an inability to make the choice and live by it. (As stated above – No Right Brain). To Burn the bridge so to speak, is a very difficult thing to do. Letting go! All of that!
Educated does not like being out of control, and yet in the end, it is!
How unsettling.
I would say our ‘Age of Anxiety’ stemming from so much information, so many opinions, so many choices, that we live in, is perhaps the quandary many live in, using all kinds of defense mechanisms, such as BEING oblivious of this fact, avoiding the paradox, surviving in arrogance, too much alcohol, etc. Hey, A lot depends on Your Matter that Innate Expresses thru. As they say being Wired for different Attributes, Universal Attributes.
Again, this Unlearning and Learning, this embracing the paradoxes, etc. and remaining at PEACE. I haven’t found it.
You have made reference to the 33 principles, in going deeper and understanding them, brings Chiropractic to a Peaceful, more optimistic?? place, embracing the light, vs the darkness of Mans Suffering which is the focus of ALL therapeutics and even Theological focuses. Suffering! A Major element of the physical, matter, LOM world.
I wish that I could make that leap of faith, in the right brain, in my heart, so that the queue that sits in my amygdala does’t always fill up with junk!
Trying Hard from some center in some forest, carrying on ADIO 😉
David,
It is me WHO choose to make a choice anytime… over NOT choosing to choose to make a choice at all. I have made many WRONG choices in my life and I have taken responsibility for those choices. Ultimately it is ALWAYS about the WHO isn’t it? Carry on. ADIO.
Claude and others,
Another point, perhaps more inline with seizing something chiropractic!
Having an objective that relies on philosophical deduction does involve assumption and choice and logic but as we know, is more or less an immaterial entity.
Results, while statistical also, are more solid, matter based, and while they exist as OI, With perhaps its own arena of assumption (assumption of benefit, short range benefits vs long range detriments or visa versa), IS that slip that becomes so tempting to find definition, to appease the unknown and uncertainty you spoke of (physics). It perhaps is illusion, but without the constant check, the discipline? To check, the patience, the support?, the fortitude, something? It’s so easy to move into the inductive world of results, and therapeutics.
What is it Claude, or whomever, that keeps you on the path, with difficult choices bountiful, yet motivated because the philosophy has stuck like glue because Your WHO has decided and committed and the body follows, with Authority.
People purchase THINGS.
A thing is as WE know or assess, UI expressing thru matter. II expressing thru innate matter. These things are bought with the illusion of permanency, but as we know are really in flux. There IS NO cure, no final solution.
People buy cars, cars run out of matter, and people buy new cars.
People buy illusions or averages of health, keep health with the pill until the pill doesn’t work and then they buy a new pill.
People buy food until the food runs out and they buy new food.
Etc. etc.
Yet these are solid things that you can touch or delude yourself that you can touch.
What can you touch in Chiropractic?
Can you touch a thought? Can you touch logic? Can you touch
Maximum expression of innate intelligence?
For me, that’s in flux. Sometimes I can, sometimes I can’t.
Through the administration of the art, or receiving the art, or THINKING and pondering the philosophy.
But sometimes at 7am, there is nothing. No pill, no car, no thought, no feeling, and it’s very disconcerting to have to rev up, reconnect to this flux, and Own it, Sell it.
Am I making sense?
I’m complaining and perhaps revealing my own LOM, but that’s cool. I sincerely hope to hit some home runs, and I have. Practice makes perfect I know.
I need a revelation! Now that’s a tall order 😉
David,
Could the gift that BJ fought so hard to preserve unsullied for mankind in regards to Chiropractic lies in its relativity? Isn’t Innate Intelligence just a concept or a way of describing how something many times more profound and familiar with all of mankind both as matter and as a thinking soul/spirit exists to direct every part of us for our good. In BJ’s day, so many sick people were getting poisoned and butchered, and when grandma finally went to the MD for her sore toe, she never came home. At the crest of the Industrial Revolution, people looked for “jobs” that made business owners rich and left them poor. The concept of Innate was a light to both groups. Innate will restore your body with time and direct your thinking (thots) to restore your endeavors (what the locust has eaten) with time.
