Great discussion guys! The mechanists denied that there was any vitalistic component to functions like the patellar reflex. BJ disagreed, said it was an innate function. Of course he was correct. So, how does this reflex action philosophically occur? Where would you theorize the innate brain was and the mechanism by which this action occurred? Please include every aspect of the mechanism including afferent and efferent from the introduction of the universal force (striking the patella region) to the action.
I need to admit the limitations of my brain matter đŸ™‚
I don’t know enough about the distinction and/or relationship between innate brain and the educated brain. Will have to sit this one out until I have a clearer understanding.
Don, what helps me is to think of the educated brain as just another organ of the body, like the liver, except that it produces educated thoughts instead of bile. Think of it in that light. Just as the liver uses innate forces and chemicals (matter) to make the bile, the educated brain uses innate forces and information to create educated thoughts.
Thanks Joe.
Sorry Joe,
We were taught the reflex arc was sent too (afferent) then from (efferent) the spinal cord with a signal sent to the brain to make us aware it happened, very mechanistic. So much for vitalism.
However now that we can include cellular intelligence, it makes sense. How’s this?
UF>impression>conversion to cellular mental impulse (TC)>transmission through afferent pathway>recognition(IB)>ideation/response(IB)>conversion to mental impulse(PB)>transmission along efferent pathway>contraction of muscle(TC).
I haven’t a clue philosophically & missed the previous thread, but ever since I took Chemistry in regular college & the professor explained how scientists in all fields were constantly trying to discover how the universe is made and how it works & that theories that are supported by research are convenient models, but not necessarily true, I’ve believed that the underlying wisdom, intelligence if you will, of the Universe knows everything about engineering and design necessary for whatever function and so includes what is needed in every form. The mechanics of how the nerve system works is interesting and useful, and the question of outside-in or inside-out can quickly become religious in effect, but the truth is we don’t have to know any of the above to be a Chiropractor, it’s just more interesting for many. Outside invasive force stretches a tendon, the designed in and living sensor communicates to the next level up & receives a return communication while that next level sends a communication up to the next level & receives communication back from there & thence on down the line. It’s not an accident, it is design.
