Many people will intentionally stop their thought processes rather than go on because going on necessitates shifting from empiricism to reason or even to faith and they are not comfortable with that. They have no desire to think outside their comfort zone. So they just never give a new concept or subject “further thought.” Our educational role as chiropractors is to evoke further thought. What do you say to make people think?
My fav question is “why do you think that _________?”
Robert, can you give us a few examples?
I use this when a PM relates a sx to me, “why do you think you got that headache?” “why do you think you blood pressure is too high?” “why do you think you not getting sick as often”. They often want to relate the subluxation or adjustment to whatever situation, but I redirect to a conversation about II when ever I can.
Good stuff Robert, Thanks!
It’s a matter of telling the story “adapted” to each individual to the best of our abilities over and over and over and over again. In order words we need to “own” chiropractic and “show-up” for the work that is ours to do. Much like a farmer with quality seeds showing up in his fields and with a superb philosophy, science and art, plough and sows with unflinching passion, KNOWING that in time some fields will educe from the earth good produce for the well being of the planet.
Claude, I think that’s a good point – in time, some will get it. Stay the course and it will pay off in time. Thanks for the reminder!
Absolutely Bob.
Again, I’m convinced that it’s not a matter of WHAT the chiropractor says. It’s ALWAYS a matter of WHO the chiropractor is. That’s why scripting works for one and doesn’t work for another. WHAT they say is the same script…
Joseph, allow me to clarify my previous post of the 22nd. When I say that it’s a matter of telling the story “adapted”, I mean that it’s up to the chiropractor (the WHO) to CREATE an environment suitable “to evoke further thoughts” as you stated in your initial post. Environment meaning: the way YOU tell the story, your office decor, the procedures, the flow, the listening components, your readings, the educational process, the visit by visit experience, your Blue books, your literature, etc… In other words, WHO “owns” chiropractic is CREATING the WHAT and the HOW. Then, EDUCERE, (which is the latin word for education, ie to educe from, to evoke) may occur if, and only if, the recipient (WHO) is willing to “desire to think outside their comfort zone”.
